Curriculum Newsletter
January 10th 2025
Welcome to our second Curriculum Newsletter which will be sent out weekly to celebrate the wonderful activities our children experience at Co-op Brierley. Each half term our Pathways learn a new theme and Talk4writing text, this half term we will cover:
Informal Pathway Captivating Colours
Children will be exploring these stories through music, food, movement, pictures and touch to learn the beauty of our world of colour.

Semi- formal: Exploring Identity and self expression
Our children are looking forward to an exciting visit from some real Owls next week and have been immersed in all things feathery to prepare for the visit.
Formal: Peoples rights
Our Literacy will focus around the challenging concept of change and human rights, whilst in Science our children will be learning about Electricity and Sound.
Phonics and Spelling
Our Informal learners have a ‘Sound Time’ session everyday which focuses on early sound discrimination, oral blending of words and symbol exchange. We use a total communication approach to hear the sound, feel the object or instrument and match the symbol.
In Semi- formal we use Read Write Inc as our phonics programme and the children move into phonic groups for a 30 minute session each day. During this lesson we teach each phoneme (or sound) so the children learn sounds and letters
which make up a word
Formal learners continue to build on their phonics skills through daily reading and spelling lessons. They use the ‘speed sounds’ to remind themselves of words with similar sounds and different spellings and to learn simple rules for spelling words correctly.
Brierley Best Learning!
We have opened two wonderful new sensory rooms to support our children’s regulation and sensory integration. The squeeze machine is a particular favourite!
Communication for Learning
Our children use different visual organisers so they know what to expect next and to reinforce the verbal directions given by adults. These are some examples from our classrooms and can be a really useful way to structure activities at home too.
